Controversy Over U.S. Nuclear Waste Repository Siting Draws Renewed Attention: Historical Decision Alleged to Have Relied Excessively on Cost Estimates
The issue of siting a U.S. nuclear waste repository has once again drawn attention. A reanalysis of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) 1986 candidate site evaluation report points out that the key factor determining the priority siting of a nuclear waste repository at that time was not fully verified differences in long-term safety performance among the sites, but mainly estimates of repository construction and operating costs and spent fuel transportation costs. This analysis argues that the relevant cost data had considerable uncertainty, yet played a decisive role in the final ranking, causing the technical evaluation to present a clearer ordering of advantages and disadvantages than the actual evidence supported. The debate over U.S. nuclear waste repository siting has lasted for decades. The 1982 Nuclear Waste Policy...

Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory Opens a New Path to Controlled Fusion Ignition: Implementing a "Heat First, Fuel Later" Strategy to Substantially Lower the Energy Threshold
A research team at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), has recently proposed an innovative fusion ignition control framework, charting an optimized path toward a self-sustaining burning plasma that requires the lowest external input energy. The study, jointly led by physicists Luis Delgado-Aparicio, Masayuki Ono, and Jonathan Menard, has been formally published in the top-tier physics academic journal Physical Review Letters (Phys...

US PPPL Reconstructs 70-Year-Old Lawson Criterion, Proposes New Fusion Ignition Pathway of "Heat First, Fuel Later"
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), released its latest findings on October 5. Laboratory physicists have reconstructed the classic Lawson criterion that has been in use for over 70 years and published the results in Physical Review Letters. The research team integrated four real-world physics effects that were previously treated separately into a unified model, mapping out an entirely new fusion ignition topography. The study shows that adopting a pathway of first heating the plasma and then increasing fuel density can achieve the ignition conditions for self-sustaining burn with far less energy consumption than traditional pathways. For over 70 years, the nuclear fusion field has relied on...

Guoke Ion Makes Its Debut at AOCMP 2026, Domestic Ion Therapy Technology Draws Attention from Asia-Pacific Peers
From September 9 to 11, 2026, the 26th Asia-Oceania Congress of Medical Physics (AOCMP 2026) was held at the Busan Port International Exhibition & Convention Center (BPEX) in South Korea. Hosted by the Korean Society of Medical Physics (KSMP), this year's congress focused on innovative applications of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and automation in the field of medical physics, and is a highly influential academic event in the Asia-Pacific region. Wang Xiaomin, Deputy General Manager of Guoke Ion, and Yang Wenjie, Assistant to the General Manager, led a delegation to attend the congress, actively carrying out academic exchanges and industry engagement. During the congress, the Guoke Ion team conducted technical presentations and exchanges through specialized seminars and a corporate exhibition booth. At the specialized seminar, the team systematically introduced the company's ion therapy equipment and its self-developed...

Myanmar Leader's Visit to Russia to Attend Bilateral Business Forum, Small Nuclear Power Plant Cooperation Draws Attention
According to Myanmar state media, Myanmar's leader Min Aung Hlaing departed for Russia on August 17 for an official visit. This is his first official visit to Russia since assuming the presidency in April this year, and the fifth country he has visited since taking office. Nuclear energy cooperation is one of the key areas in Myanmar-Russia economic, trade, and energy cooperation in recent years. In 2025, during formal talks between Min Aung Hlaing and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, the two countries signed an agreement to build a small nuclear power plant in Myanmar. Relevant reports did not disclose the project's installed capacity, site selection, technical route, or construction timeline. Russia...

MIT Research Proposes Framework for Assessing Economic Viability of Fusion Power Plants
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have recently proposed an assessment framework aimed at addressing the core question that fusion energy must confront in transitioning from scientific feasibility to commercial profitability: how can a fusion power plant achieve economic viability in the energy market? The related open-access paper, titled "Criteria for the Economic Viability of Fusion Power Plants," has been published online in the Journal of Fusion Energy. The paper is authored by Dennis Whyte, Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT, and Andrew W. Lo, Professor of Finance at the MIT Sloan School of Management, with contributions from researchers at Rutherford Energy Ventures and the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center.

Amazon Withdraws Data Center Plans Near Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant
Amazon has withdrawn its plans to build data centers near the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Maryland. The decision comes after some local residents expressed concerns about the proposal, citing potential environmental and health impacts. Nevertheless, supporters argued that the move would bring new tax revenue to the region. Amazon had originally planned to establish seven facilities across three campuses on 2,000 acres of land near the nuclear plant. Calvert County Commission officials stated they would hold a public hearing on August 18 to consider a six-month temporary moratorium on any data center development projects. The proposed ordinance would establish a temporary pause...
