Malaysia Evaluates Inclusion of Nuclear Power in Long-Term Energy Mix
Malaysia is steadily paving the way for the future introduction of nuclear energy into its energy mix. Although such plans are unlikely to materialize in the short term, policy assessments, regulatory preparations, talent development, and business model discussions surrounding civilian nuclear energy have noticeably accelerated. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently held a national workshop in Malaysia to introduce a human resource development model for the nuclear sector, aimed at helping the country forecast future staffing needs and support workforce planning required for nuclear technology applications. In March this year, Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Fadillah Yusof stated that Malaysia has conducted a comprehensive assessment of a potential nuclear energy program, covering policy formulation, regulatory...

Qinshan Nuclear Power Completes Overhaul Validation of Grille Cleaning Robotic Arm
The grille cleaning robotic arm, an integrated system of UAV-based intelligent inspection and robotic arm automatic cleaning independently developed by the Mechanical Team of the Fourth Maintenance Division at Qinshan Nuclear Power, recently completed on-site validation during the Unit 2 312 overhaul at Qinshan Phase II. Designed for seawater system intake grille cleaning scenarios, this equipment transforms the original manual operation requiring entry into deep wells into an unmanned operation conducted under ground-based remote monitoring. The intake grille serves as a critical barrier for the cooling water system of a nuclear power plant, and its unobstructed condition is directly related to the stable operation of the unit. In traditional cleaning methods, workers were required to enter narrow shafts more than twenty meters underground to perform inspection and cleaning in confined spaces, which involved high labor intensity, low efficiency, and safety risks such as falls from height...

Demolition Begins on Contaminated Buildings in Isotope Area at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
The Oak Ridge Environmental Management Office in Tennessee recently initiated demolition of a group of highly contaminated buildings in the Isotope Area at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Located in the laboratory's central campus, this area is considered one of the more challenging sites in the local cleanup effort. The Isotope Area comprises 10 facilities, constructed between the late 1940s and early 1960s, which once served the laboratory's isotope program. These facilities were used for decades in the production, processing, and research of chemical elements for medical, industrial, and scientific applications. As the laboratory evolved, the facilities were taken out of service in the early 1990s but remained standing. According to reports, the area retains contaminated...

Gallium ion FIB-SEM sample preparation has a damage limit; low-energy argon ion beam cleaning is used to improve TEM sample quality
Gallium ion focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (Ga⁺ FIB-SEM) has become an important method for site-specific thin lamella sample preparation for transmission electron microscopy/scanning transmission electron microscopy (TEM/STEM), enabling cutting, extraction, and thinning of target regions at the nanometer scale. However, the literature indicates that while gallium ions provide high-precision machining capability, they also cause amorphization, ion implantation, and localized chemical modification on the sample surface, which can subsequently affect high-resolution imaging and energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis results. According to the literature, Ga⁺ FIB-SEM typically enables high-resolution site-specific machining at 30 keV, but high-energy gallium ions form a damage layer on the sample sidewalls. Taking silicon as an example...
