South Korea to Launch Real-Time Query System for CT and MRI Records in December to Reduce Duplicate Tests for Patients Transferring Hospitals
The Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) of South Korea announced on August 10 that it has established the "Appropriate Medical Utilization Review Committee" and, at its first meeting, included computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations in the review scope of the real-time medical utilization management program. According to the plan, the program will be managed through the "Medical Care Benefit Details Confirmation System" following approval by the Minister of Health and Welfare. The system, built pursuant to Article 41-6 of the revised National Health Insurance Act, is expected to officially operate starting December 24. Once the system is in place, medical personnel will be able to query in real time the timing and relevant records of patients' CT and MRI examinations at other medical institutions before the patients undergo examinations, thereby reducing...

Russian Scientists Propose Fast Calculation Method to Simulate Plasma Ion Parameters in Seconds
Researchers from the HSE University and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) have developed an analytical method for calculating the behavior of heavy ions in helium under strong electric fields, which can accelerate the computation of ion mobility and ion–molecule reaction rates by thousands of times. The findings have been published in Physica Scripta. Plasma, composed of charged particles such as electrons, negative ions, and positive ions, is typically quasi-neutral and highly conductive. It exists not only in fluorescent lamps and welding arcs but is also used in controlled nuclear fusion devices such as tokamaks. Atmospheric plasma jets can also be applied to wound disinfection, work surface cleaning...

Low Danube Water Level Tests Bulgaria's Nuclear Operations, Energy Minister Says Kozloduy Plant Can Sustain Operations for About a Week and a Half
Bulgarian Energy Minister Iva Petrova said on August 7 that if the Danube River water level remains at its current level, the Kozloduy nuclear power plant can continue normal operations for about a week and a half. She described the situation facing the plant as difficult and dynamically changing, while emphasizing that the plant is currently operating stably with no direct failures affecting power generation. The Kozloduy nuclear power plant is a critical facility in Bulgaria's power system, and the high attention paid to Danube water level changes is mainly related to the cooling conditions required for plant operations. Persistently low water levels may increase operational dispatch pressure and require the energy sector to more frequently assess safety margins and subsequent response measures.

Mutsu City Requests Submission of Revised Plan for 5,000-Ton Transport to Spent Fuel Interim Storage Facility
On August 7, Tomoya Yamamoto, Mayor of Mutsu City, Aomori Prefecture, Japan, met with representatives of Recycle Fuel Storage (RFS) and its co-investors Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO HD) and Japan Atomic Power Company (JAPC), requesting the three parties to submit a revised mid-to-long-term spent nuclear fuel transport plan, with consideration given to inter-operator cooperation. The plan may involve accepting spent nuclear fuel from other electric power companies. The facility in question, located in Mutsu City, Aomori Prefecture, is currently Japan's only interim spent fuel storage facility situated outside a nuclear power plant site. Under the existing siting agreement, the facility's acceptance scope...

Kazakhstan Welcomes Its First Cohort of Nuclear Industry Specialists
On August 5, the inaugural graduation ceremony was held in Almaty for the first cohort of students at the Kazakhstan branch campus of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (НИЯУ МИФИ). Timur Zhantikin, Vice Chairman of the Atomic Energy Agency of Kazakhstan, attended the ceremony and presented diplomas to the graduates. In his address, he noted that as Kazakhstan's atomic energy industry enters a new phase of development, the demand for specialized professionals continues to grow, and the targeted training programs offered by the branch campus are crucial to filling this gap. The graduation of this first cohort marks the beginning of Kazakhstan's establishment of an independent domestic nuclear talent cultivation system. For a long time, Kazakhstan's nuclear industry has relied on overseas education or on-the-job training to supplement its engineering workforce...

Japanese PET Study Suggests Late-Onset Psychosis May Be Linked to Neurodegenerative Pathology
A nuclear medicine imaging study conducted by a Japanese research team has shown that many adults who experience psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions for the first time after age 40 have abnormal protein deposits in the brain associated with Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. The study included 37 patients with late-onset psychosis and 47 age-matched healthy controls. The researchers used the amyloid PET tracer ^11C-PiB and the tau protein PET tracer ^18F-florzolotau to assess the accumulation of β-amyloid and tau proteins in the participants' brains. The results showed that among patients with late-onset psychosis, β-amyloid positivity...

CGN Dasheng NDT Helps Power Batteries Pass Quality Tests Smoothly
News of new energy vehicle fires occasionally surfaces, and the culprit is almost always the power battery. To fundamentally address this industry-wide problem, the mandatory national safety standard "Safety Requirements for Traction Battery of Electric Vehicles" will officially take effect on July 1, 2026, ushering in the strictest examination the battery industry has ever faced. Facing high-standard testing requirements, CGN Dasheng has deployed its full suite of non-destructive testing capabilities, leveraging precise and comprehensive non-destructive flaw detection technologies to help the industry deliver a high-standard safety answer sheet. The internal structure of a power battery is wound layer upon layer, resembling a Swiss roll. During production, subtle defects such as electrode foil wrinkles, metal debris contamination, and misalignment between positive and negative electrodes may occur. These "minor issues" can evolve into overheating,...

Montpellier, France, tests control of tiger mosquitoes by releasing 200,000 X-ray-sterilized males weekly
Montpellier, France, is testing a mosquito control strategy that does not rely on chemical insecticides by releasing X-ray-sterilized sterile male tiger mosquitoes, in response to the spread of tiger mosquitoes and the associated disease transmission risks. The trial has been underway since 2025 in the Malbosc residential area of Montpellier. This area is suitable for tiger mosquito breeding, and the trial team releases sterile male tiger mosquitoes at approximately 30 release points twice a week, about 100,000 per release, equivalent to roughly 200,000 per week across an area of about 50 hectares. The method is based on the sterile insect technique. Since only female mosquitoes bite and suck blood and may transmit viruses, and females typically mate only once in their lifetime, researchers release male mosquitoes that have lost their reproductive capacity after X-ray treatment into the wild to mate with wild females. The eggs subsequently laid by females fail to fertilize normally, thereby reducing the next generation of mosquito populations.
