CNNC Huaxing's Self-Developed "Island-Building Machine" Completes First Jacking at Xuwei Project
Recently, the containment construction integrated platform (referred to as the "Island-Building Machine") for Unit 1 of the Jiangsu Xuwei Nuclear Heating and Power Plant, constructed and independently developed by CNNC Huaxing, successfully completed its first jacking, officially transitioning from installation and commissioning to the autonomous climbing phase. The platform integrates self-climbing, enclosed operations, and intelligent monitoring, and innovatively adopts a lightweight modular design. It incorporates equipment such as the platform system, wall-attached supports, hydraulic climbing, safety monitoring, and folding-boom cranes, effectively reducing R&D costs and improving assembly and disassembly efficiency. The Island-Building Machine has three core functions: first, the hydraulic system drives synchronous jacking of machine positions, eliminating dependence on tower cranes for repeated lifting of formwork hanging frames; second, the top platform also serves as a material yard, with folding-boom cranes...

On September 29, the Chinese Academy of Sciences held a press conference in Beijing, announcing the official launch of the Scientific Frontier Extreme Breakthrough Program and unveiling the first batch of launched projects. The program is based on the advantages of national major science and technology infrastructure clusters and a comprehensive disciplinary institutional framework, launching a systematic scientific expedition in the directions of the extremely macroscopic, extremely microscopic, extreme conditions, and extreme comprehensive interdisciplinarity (the "four extremes"). Zhou Qi, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, stated that the program aims to break the traditional single-point breakthrough model through the open and combined use of major science and technology infrastructure and the deep empowerment of artificial intelligence (AI for Science), building a systematic research paradigm for tackling key problems in the context of great power competition. In the released layout of the "four extremes" breakthrough tasks, the first...

Breakthrough in High-Energy Nuclear Physics Research: Chinese Research Team Leverages CERN's Large Hadron Collider to Reveal How Nuclear Geometry Influences Matter Flow
Relying on the A Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the research team led by Professor Li Xiaomei at the National Key Laboratory of Nuclear Data, China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE), in international collaboration with the team led by Professor Zhou You at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, conducted research. The joint team studied the Oxygen-16 (Oxygen-16, $^{16}\text{O}$) and Neon-20 (Neon-20, $^{20}\text{Ne}$) light-nucleus collision system and achieved important progress regarding collective flow phenomena dominated by nuclear structure, confirming that the spatial geometric configuration of atomic nuclei can directly regulate the laws of matter flow in high-energy nuclear collisions, providing key experimental constraints for improving relativistic heavy-ion collision theory and resolving microscopic nuclear structure.

Chinese Research Team Develops Novel Adsorbent Material for Uranium Extraction from Seawater
On September 2, it was learned from the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as "QIBEBT") that the research team has recently made a series of advances in the field of uranium extraction materials from seawater. The team introduced discrete molecular topological design into porous organic cage systems for the first time, synthesizing the phosphate-functionalized material PhosCage, and further compounded it with aramid nanofibers to prepare composite aerogel microspheres AC-POC possessing high selectivity, high capacity, and anti-biofouling capability. The relevant results were published in the international academic journals Journal of Hazardous Materials and Separation and Purification Technology. The deep ocean harbors a vast uranium reservoir, but how to economically and efficiently extract uranium from it remains...

Portable X-ray Equipment in the U.S. Used for On-Site Assessment of American Football Injuries
As the 2026–2027 American football season approaches, team training camps, player evaluations, and medical support preparations are getting underway. Given the risk of acute sports injuries from the high-intensity physical contact in American football, portable X-ray equipment is being used to improve the efficiency of injury assessment on the sidelines and at training facilities. According to reports, American football players are prone to fractures, sprains, joint dislocations, and contusions. Relevant data indicates that the incidence of severe injuries such as fractures, dislocations, and contusions in this sport is higher than in other sports, with fractures accounting for approximately 10% of all football injuries. Such injuries typically require X-ray radiography to aid diagnosis, but traditional X-ray machines are bulky and fixed in place, usually requiring use in facilities with appropriate shielding. Injured players often need to be transported to the radiology department for examinations, which may delay diagnosis and treatment decisions.

U.S. STREAMLINE Project Advances Nuclear Quantum Many-Body Research with Artificial Intelligence
On August 25, 2026, a new project named STREAMLINE is combining artificial intelligence, machine learning, and supercomputing to address the nuclear quantum many-body problem in nuclear physics research, aiming to more accurately simulate the interactions between protons and neutrons within atomic nuclei and provide theoretical support for frontier topics such as neutron stars and fundamental interactions. The difficulty of the nuclear quantum many-body problem lies in the fact that as the number of particles increases, the possible interactions among them grow rapidly, and traditional computational methods quickly hit the ceiling of computing power. Even with high-performance supercomputers, only quantum systems of relatively limited scale can typically be handled. The STREAMLINE project hopes to...

Russian team develops machine learning model to predict stability of rare earth and actinide complexes
Researchers from the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Intelligent Chemical Design at the Department of Chemistry of Lomonosov Moscow State University, in collaboration with colleagues from the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics, have developed a new machine learning model for evaluating the stability of complexes of rare earth elements and trivalent actinides. The results have been published in the Journal of Chemical Physics. The research team stated that machine learning can reduce time and material costs in chemical research, which is particularly important for rare, expensive, or hazardous lanthanides and actinides. Lanthanides, along with scandium and yttrium, are commonly classified as rare earth elements and are widely used in permanent magnets, batteries, electronic components, lasers, and other applications. Since rare earth elements in nature...
