IAEA Releases White Paper on the Facilitation of the Safe and Secure Transport of Radioactive Material

IAEA Releases White Paper on the Facilitation of the Safe and Secure Transport of Radioactive Material

During a side event of the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held in Vienna, Austria, the IAEA Denial of Shipment Working Group officially released and distributed to Member States the White Paper on the Facilitation of the Safe and Secure Transport of Radioactive Material. The white paper puts forward a series of systematic policy recommendations aimed at effectively alleviating the long-standing predicament of denial of shipment or serious delay of shipment in the cross-border transport of radioactive material that has long plagued nuclear power plants, hospitals, industrial non-destructive testing facilities, and scientific research institutions worldwide...

UAE Releases 2025 Annual Nuclear Regulatory Report, Highlighting Nuclear Safety and Peaceful Use Achievements

UAE Releases 2025 Annual Nuclear Regulatory Report, Highlighting Nuclear Safety and Peaceful Use Achievements

The UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) has released its "2025 Annual Report," showcasing regulatory progress over the past year in nuclear safety, radiation protection, and nuclear non-proliferation. The report indicates that the UAE continues to advance its nuclear governance framework in line with the "We the UAE 2031" vision, enhancing regulatory efficiency while emphasizing that nuclear technology and nuclear materials must serve peaceful purposes. The report specifically highlights FANR's launch of a unified import and export system. This digital platform is designed to streamline the regulatory processes for the import and export of nuclear and radioactive materials, while strengthening regulatory transparency and traceability. The development of this system demonstrates that the UAE is focused not only on the safety of nuclear facilities themselves...

Honeycomb Materials Cross Over into Nuclear Energy: The Gill Corporation Enters the Radioactive Material Container Market

Honeycomb Materials Cross Over into Nuclear Energy: The Gill Corporation Enters the Radioactive Material Container Market

Basque Country-based company The Gill Corporation is applying its proven honeycomb structural material technology to the field of radioactive material containers, thereby entering the nuclear energy industry chain. The so-called honeycomb structure is typically known for its lightweight nature, high strength, impact resistance, and stable support, and has historically been used more in aerospace, transportation, or industrial composite applications; its current use in nuclear-related containers indicates that traditional high-performance materials companies are seeking new growth opportunities against the backdrop of the nuclear energy renaissance. The transport and storage of radioactive materials impose extremely high safety requirements on containers, which must not only account for mechanical strength, vibration resistance, and impact tolerance, but also meet long-term reliability, traceability, and stringent industry...

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Proposed Rule to Update Radioactive Material Transport Regulations for New Reactor Technologies

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Proposed Rule to Update Radioactive Material Transport Regulations for New Reactor Technologies

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has issued a proposed rule aimed at updating regulations for the transport of radioactive material to accommodate the development of new reactor technologies. The existing regulatory framework has not fully kept pace with advances in nuclear technology, particularly as microreactors and other advanced reactor types present new challenges to current rules. Approximately three million packages containing radioactive material are transported across the United States each year, and this vast logistics operation has been managed by federal agencies for decades. The NRC's proposed rule addresses a specific issue: how to safely transport new types of nuclear reactors and their associated radioactive materials. Microreactors are compact, factory-manufactured...

Philippine DOE launches nuclear power plant site screening with IAEA support

Philippine DOE launches nuclear power plant site screening with IAEA support

The Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) recently stated that it has begun preparing nuclear power plant site screening work in accordance with internationally recognized safety standards. Collaborating with experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the DOE is wrapping up an intensive workshop on site and external event design this week to strengthen the country's nuclear power plant site screening process. Energy Secretary Sharon Garin stated that selecting the right site is one of the most critical decisions in developing a nuclear power program, and that close collaboration with the IAEA ensures every step is guided by the highest international standards of science, rigorous technical assessment, and resilient public safety protection. The workshop brought together technical experts from the DOE and partner agencies alongside specialists from the IAEA's External Events Safety Section to share recognized methodologies for assessing potential sites against earthquakes, floods, volcanic activity, extreme weather, and other natural and human-induced risks.

Anambra State, Nigeria Strengthens Cooperation with Nuclear Regulatory Authority to Enhance Safety Management of Medical Radioactive Materials

Anambra State, Nigeria Strengthens Cooperation with Nuclear Regulatory Authority to Enhance Safety Management of Medical Radioactive Materials

The Anambra State Government of Nigeria recently stated that it will strengthen cooperation with the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) to enhance radiation safety across the state and ensure the safe and compliant use of radioactive materials in medical institutions. At a meeting held in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, Dr. Afam Obidike, the State Commissioner for Health, exchanged views on relevant cooperation with a delegation from the NNRA. The delegation was led by Ekene Efenemoku, the NNRA's Southeast Zonal Coordinator. Efenemoku stated that the visit aimed to deepen bilateral cooperation and brief the state government on the NNRA's statutory responsibilities. According to his introduction, the...

U.S. Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Develops New Vacuum Attachment for Nuclear Fallout Collection

U.S. Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Develops New Vacuum Attachment for Nuclear Fallout Collection

Nuclear nonproliferation researchers at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) have invented a specialized attachment compatible with commercial handheld vacuum cleaners, designed to safely and efficiently collect radioactive fallout generated after a nuclear explosion. The intense heat from a nuclear blast lifts ground debris into the atmosphere, where it melts and cools into radioactive glass beads less than 1 millimeter in diameter that fall back to the ground. In the past, nuclear experts undergoing training could only collect samples using brooms, dustpans, and ordinary household battery-powered vacuum cleaners, making manual containment difficult and posing extremely high radiation exposure risks. The INL team began producing prototypes with a thermoplastic 3D printer in 2017, and after multiple rounds of iteration, has now commissioned a company in American Falls, Idaho, to mass-produce the attachment using industrial-grade 3D printing, significantly improving durability.
